Featured Wine: 2012 David Moret Meursault – Genevrieres Premier Cru
“Meursault, Tasting World Class White Wine”
It might come to a surprise for those that don’t know me well, but I prefer White Wine over Red Wine. There I said it.
Red vs White Wine
I know it might come to a surprise to some as generally most people enjoy drinking Red Wines to White. Some people only drink one versus the other. I am not here to argue that one style of wine is better than the other. Everyone’s palate is unique to their own and has their own personal preferences. My personal preference is that I almost always prefer White Wine.
Numbers Game
Well Made White Wine is something of a rarity though. I don’t blame most people for thinking white wine is in a lower tier. I believe it’s more of an exposure issue though. Think back, “When was the last time I spent more than $30 dollars on a bottle of White Wine?”
If it’s been a while don’t feel bad. For quite a few people its few and far between. Now, think back, “When was the last time I spent more than $30 dollars on a bottle of Red Wine?” For most the red wine wins on the number of occasions.
100 Dollar Bottle
Now think back when was the last time I spent 100 Dollars on a bottle of wine in general? Very few are huge wine enthusiast to spend that much on both fronts or if so, it is usually reserved for a special occasion and consumed at a restaurant. At this price point it certainly is a luxury.
Wine Club: Luxury Taste – Affordable Price
“World Class White Wine”
This Wine: David Moret 2012 Meursault – Genevrieres Premier Cru, is typically in the Luxury Tier. Premier Cru Meursault command an expensive price because they are “World Class Wines”. Very few places offer a better expression of Chardonnay then in Burgundy in the Cรดte de Beaune. Most Chardonnay wines found elsewhere use places like Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet in the Cรดte de Beaune as their model of excellence for what they are trying to achieve.
Luckily for both of us, we don’t have to pay such price to enjoy these wines. This bottle has been one of my favorites that I have tasted in the last year. And it certainly has become one of Jayleen’s favorite, my Significant Other. Every time I open a bottle of White Wine she says, “Is that the Chardonnay that I like?” She is addicted! I don’t blame here this wine is delicious.
Tasting Note
Its Rich, it has an amazing silky texture on the palate. The flavors are robust at first but with plenty of subtle spice and mineral undertones that follow. A creaminess coats the entire mouth. Then this mouthwatering acidity takes over that makes you salivate for more. On the Nose the wine is very seductive, tropical fruit notes, and spices add a very nice warmth to the wine.
Producer Profile: Master Of Chardonnay
David Moret only makes White Wine from Chardonnay. He studied Viticulture and Oenology as school. Unlike a lot of Burgundy wine makers David Moret didn’t have a family domaine. After graduating he got a job selling wine equipment to local winemakers. This allowed him to gain connections and relationships with winemakers that would soon allow him to start producing wines, which he started doing in 2000.
The 16 ha of Les Genevrieres sit towards the south of Meursault; the name โGenevriereโ literally means โJuniperรญโ, from the many Juniper bushes that lined the hills in the past. Soils here are extremely stony, and the aspect is southeasterly and therefore sunny, conferring intensity and richness in the wines. The grapes were all handpicked into small boxes, which ensured the berries remained intact and healthy for their arrival at the winery. Grapes were brought straight to the winery and were pressed immediately, to preserve the precious Chardonnay aromas and flavors. The wine went through alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels, and ageing, for 18 months before being bottled and resting in cellars for several months. David used 30% new French oak, to ensure that the fine character of his Meursault shines through.
